There was high praise for the environmental efforts of leading bus operator Stagecoach Yorkshire at a prestigious business awards ceremony. Stagecoach was highly commended at the 2009 Rotherham Business Awards for its ongoing commitment to tackling the challenge of climate change. The company, which operates services across South Yorkshire, Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire, was shortlisted in the Environmental Award category for its efforts to encourage greater use of public transport and reducing its own carbon footprint. The Awards gala dinner, organised by Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, was hosted by BBC television presenter Harry Gration at the Magna Centre on Friday, October 23rd. Paul Lynch, managing director of Stagecoach Yorkshire, said: “Over the past 12 months, Stagecoach Yorkshire has introduced a number of eco-initiatives, offers and promotions to encourage people out of cars and onto public transport. Being highly commended is fantastic recognition for this ongoing commitment to reduce our own carbon footprint and also encourage staff and customers to think and act green by choosing buses as a good value, reliable and convenient low-carbon travel option.” Stagecoach Yorkshire’s successful Eco Drive initiative, offering seven days’ free bus travel, has already been taken up by thousands of residents across Barnsley, the Dearne Valley, Sheffield and Chesterfield. It followed the launch of the company’s inaugural Green Week, during which customers and staff were invited to participate in a series of awareness-raising activities and events. Earlier this year, Stagecoach Yorkshire became the first public transport company in the UK to join the Care4Air ECO Stars Fleet Recognition programme in South Yorkshire, which recognises fleet operators who are using lower polluting vehicles and effective fuel management. This summer, the company also launched South Yorkshire’s first green cycle initiative, enabling passengers travelling on Stagecoach Yorkshire vehicles to take on a folding bike for free as part of a fully integrated, low carbon journey option combining cycling and buses.
