Every year millions of journeys are made by people travelling throughout South Yorkshire on public transport. Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham & Sheffield Councils and its partners want to improve public transport by making it more reliable and punctual. One way to achieve this is by bus lane enforcement. Bus lanes separate buses and authorised vehicles such as taxis, emergency services and bikes from other vehicles, giving priority to buses. Bus and tram ‘gates’ allow buses, trams and authorised vehicles to use lengths of road that other traffic cannot. These features, when properly enforced, improve journey times and reliability and make public transport a more attractive travel option both for existing and would-be public transport users. They are needed because fewer people on public transport would mean more cars on the road and more congestion. A Bus Lane can be enforced via time periods which is usually at peak times, meaning that you can drive in these Bus Lanes at off peak times and at weekends. Some Bus Lanes in South Yorkshire are 24 hour Bus Lanes meaning that only Buses, Taxis, Cyclists & Authorised Vehicles are allowed to use the Bus Lane at any given time. Sheffield Bus Lane CCTV Enforcement Camera enforcement of bus lanes and tram gates in Sheffield will be introduced in stages. The first stage was the introduction of camera enforcement at the Hillsborough bus and tram gates in June 2007. What to do if you receive a Penalty Charge Notice If you are caught on camera:
